Working closely with Dr. Manfred Neuscheler, Grossharden Munich, CMI designed and developed an 18 Ga spinal catheter capable of monitoring spinal temperature and pressure and allowing for the subsequent drainage of spinal fluid in the event that there is an increase in spinal pressure. This catheter has been successfully used in a number of patients in Munich during vascular surgery where there is a need to clamp the aorta. In these high risk surgery, the spinal column is often cooled to prevent neurological damage. Using the catheter developed together with Dr. Nuscheler, doctors can now monitor the pressure and temperature in the spinal column and also withdraw fluid to reduce spinal pressure thus avoiding complications which can lead to severe nerve damage.
